Starter Kits for Children Entering Foster Care

At Connect, we provide Starter Kits to every child entering foster care with the goal of reducing immediate stress and helping foster families focus on what matters most—healing and bonding during a major life transition.

As soon as we are notified that a child is entering care, a member of our team begins assembling a customized Starter Kit tailored to the child’s needs. Each kit typically includes:

• Clothing for several days (including pajamas, undergarments, socks, and shoes)

• Personal hygiene items

• Comfort items such as a stuffed animal or blanket

• Gift cards to support the foster family:

  • $100 to the Connect Thrift Store

  • $100 grocery card

  • $100 Target gift card

  • A gift certificate for a meal from Dinner is in the Bag

In some cases, kits also include bedding, bedroom furniture, or other specific items based on the family’s or child’s needs. Each Starter Kit is valued at approximately $500.

Once assembled, the kit is delivered directly to the child—either at the agency office or the doorstep of the foster home—ensuring a smooth and supportive welcome into their new environment.
