The Access Food - Feed the Hungry program provides a mechanism whereby hunters can donate a deer and all processing costs are covered.  The ground meat is then delivered to local food pantries in Brown, Pike and Schuyler Counties to distribute to families.  This is the only source of protein these food pantries receive. With the increase in food prices at grocery stores, the need for this program doubled last year.  Based on last year's numbers, we anticipate processing 520 deer this year which will provide 26,000 pounds (13 tons) of meat. This will provide 104,000 meals to individuals that are struggling to feed their families.  Venison is nutrient dense, low in fat, and high in protein, iron and B vitamins.  Venison offers a healthier alternative to highly processed foods. The access to venison will reduce the risk of anemia and the vitamin intake will support overall physical health.  The low fat and low cholesterol nature of venison is helpful for those with heart disease, diabetes and hypertension. Just being able to access a free meat product will reduce stress, anxiety and depression for the individuals and families served. Having a reliable access to a high-quality meat product enhances emotional well-being and family stability.  The target population includes low income families and families that do not qualify for federal assistance such as the SNAP program but still need help.  According to data provided by Feeding America, between 12% and 16% of our residents are deemed "food insecure" meaning they do not have steady access to food.  The childhood food insecurity rate is at 25% which means 1 in 4 children do not know where their next meal will come from. Because we are in a rural area that widely accepts the use of venison, our protein product is greatly appreciated and valued.  The food pantries provide products to use to prepare the venison in different recipes such as pasta sauce, sloppy joe mix and chili. Recipes and instructions on the safe preparation of meat are provided.  Utilizing venison to meet local food pantry needs can assist wildlife management efforts that help prevent overpopulation of deer, which can ultimately reduce vehicle collisions and crop degradation. It converts a wildlife management byproduct into a valuable community resource.
