To many people, Lorelai Gilmore appears to have it all together. She’s hardworking, funny, fiercely independent, and completely devoted to her daughter. She shows up every day, works hard, and keeps pushing forward no matter what life throws at her. But beneath the quick wit and endless cups of coffee, Lorelai is ALICE.

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are individuals and families who are working, contributing members of the community, but still struggle to afford basic necessities like housing, childcare, groceries, transportation, and healthcare. In Adams County, 26% of households are living as ALICE today.

Lorelai’s story reflects a reality many people quietly face every day. She works constantly, but one unexpected expense can throw everything off balance. She stretches every dollar, worries about providing for her child, and carries the pressure of trying to make life feel stable even when it doesn’t always feel that way behind closed doors.

And that’s what makes ALICE so important to understand: most people struggling financially do not fit the stereotypes we often imagine. They are parents, coworkers, friends, managers, caregivers, and neighbors. They are people who work hard every single day and still find themselves walking a financial tightrope.

For many ALICE households, there is no room for error. A medical bill, car repair, reduction in work hours, or increase in rent can quickly become overwhelming. Yet so many continue to push through in silence because asking for help can feel uncomfortable, embarrassing, or even impossible.

That’s why stories like Lorelai’s matter. They help us recognize that ALICE is not “someone else.” ALICE exists right here in our own community. These are real families facing real challenges, and they deserve compassion, support, and understanding.

Lorelai is ALICE. And she is far from alone.
