$500,000 Goal

The current McDonough County Animal Shelter is over 45 years old, in decline, and beyond repair.  Kennels are old and in disrepair.  Lack of space for necessary functions (e.g., isolation and quarantine rooms, “meet and greet” space, and laundry and food preparation) has a severe impact.  Parking is an issue, as are the decrepit drop-off kennels.

In 2017, a memorial donation was made to the Humane Society of McDonough County (HSMC) and the County Board.  The County Board and HSMC reached an agreement that the HSMC, as a tax-deductible organization, would assume responsibility for raising the funds required to build a new county wide animal shelter. The HSMC has raised over $965,000 of the $1.5 million estimated as needed.  We hope to raise $500,000 for the building campaign through WCIL Gives.

The new shelter will be a 21st-century, ADA compliant facility that accommodates the needs of lost and homeless animals, and is an inviting place for community members to find a pet, volunteer, and access resources.  The larger building will house the same amount of animals and provide needed space for additional functions.

Enhancements will include:

  1. Modern housing and lighting for optimal viewing and improve the animals' health and living conditions.
  2. A “meet and greet” room to get acquainted with a potential new pet in privacy and comfort.
  3. Critically important intake, quarantine, and isolation areas, with efficient HVAC systems to inhibit disease.
  4. Animal drop-off kennels connected to the main building will provide safe and secure temporary housing.
  5. Adequate office, utilities space, and storage for orderly maintenance of shelter records and food and supplies.
  6. Adequate parking space.

The City of Macomb has agreed to lease land, just east of the current shelter, to the HSMC for the new facility on Tower Road.

The HSMC is a 100% volunteer organization.  The HSMC’s initiatives are totally dependent on donations, membership dues, memorials, and gifts.  The New Shelter Building Campaign is a separate initiative from HSMC fundraising to support its programs.  The HSMC is a State of Illinois Not-for-Profit and a qualified 501(c) (3) organization.
