The Friends of the Washington Theater nfp is a group of volunteers and supporters dedicated to the restoration and redevelopment of the historic Washington Theater, located in downtown Quincy, Illinois. Opened in 1924, the Washington Theater serves as an anchor for the iconic Washington Park Square where the Lincoln Douglas debates took place in 1858. Architect E.L. Rupert designed the theater after visiting Washington Square Park for a picnic in 1921. Washington Theater remains one of his only standing theaters.

Giving Activity

Mission

The Washington Theater Redevelopment Commission oversees the decision-making process of changes to the theater building’s uses and physical rehabilitation.

The committee makes recommendations to the commission and to City Council based on thorough consultation and research. As the project progresses and evolves, so will the specific tasks of the committee throughout time. The committee has already formed the beginning of a larger local volunteer base, Friends of the Washington Theater which is the 501C3 fundraising and event planning group for the Washington Theater.. If you are interested in volunteering or becoming a member, your time and/or talents to this project please contact us so that we can keep you notified of its progress.
